History and Issues:

The current job market in Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia region is lacking sufficient talented workers to adequately fill the employment opportunities that exist.

People with disabilities continue to lead the ranks of the unemployed and despite continued efforts both legislatively and by rehabilitation professionals, many factors still exist that hinder the likelihood to dramatically change these statistics.

The Academy:

The Sierra Group remembers Karin DiNardi:

Karin Dinardi was a friend to The Sierra Group, and one of the debut students and staff in the Academy, during its creation and early years. For me, it was a personal pleasure to get to know Karin and to become her friend. We will miss her, and her influence and smile will live on in hearts. Janet Fiore, CEO, The Sierra Group.

The Sierra Groupís Workforce Strategy division was the managing consultant that worked with Liberty Resources to create the Academy. The Sierra Group continues to provide assessments for all incoming students, and serves as the retained subject matter expert on wide array of workforce preparation and technology matters.

Combining the resources available through Liberty Resources, a premier Center for Independent Living, and The Sierra Group Inc.'s recognized Rehabilitation Engineering Approach TM to Workplace Technology TM, an innovative model for enhanced learning and Career success has been created...The Workplace Technology Training Academy of Philadelphia will provide:

  • The local and regional economy with the talent that it is seeking.
  • Heightened opportunities for independence to people with disabilities.

Academy Success Story:

"Hello, my name is Carlos, and on January 2, 2001 I was given the opportunity to become a part of The Workplace Technology Training Academy. I was able to enhance my knowledge of computers by taking the Advanced Computers Course and enhance my professional skills through the Basic Business Communications Course. I took the Math Course as well, and I was able to increase my math skills while also observing the methods of teaching this course. Through my coursework, I learned many things, including how to create templates & macros on the computer, and how to be more confident at work.

The Academy has changed my life because I can now use the skills I learned at work, and in everyday situations. I have been promoted from my position as a Billing Assistant at Liberty Resources to a Teacher's Assistant at The Academy. The Academy can help people with disabilities and able-bodied individuals to achieve their goals of independent living and employment. With these goals accomplished, we will all have a better quality of life, and to me that is what The Academy is all about."
